The Calling Season 1 Episode Number 5 Preview and review
The Calling Season 1
Episode 5 Preview & Review
The police are at the scene of the bomb and the evacuation of the kindergarten. Janine is confronted by a tall bald man holding a child who tells him the bomb isn't real and clicks his pictures to read later. Avi also comes to the scene. Janine notices another suspicious-looking man in the crowd of parents. When he approaches, he runs away, but Janine catches up.
Earl instructs him to run even alone. Kathleen is furious and wants the culprit caught as soon as possible. The man who ran is someone Anna knows. His name is Brad Holt, and he had his daughter in daycare before, but then pulled her out. Anna says she's not the type to do something like that. Brad admits he shouldn't have run to Janie, but says he's innocent. He backs her into a corner and demands a lawyer instead of informing her.
Janine vents her frustrations to a sympathetic Avi. But they don't think he is guilty. For the second time, Anna reveals that it was a woman who threatened her. Avi questions Brad about his running away and tries to emotionally blackmail him into giving him something for the sake of Gabrielle (Brad's daughter), the other kids his age, but fails.
He is electric and has noticed that the bomb is not real. He informs them that his wife Elizabeth is going to Mexico. They have two sons, Eric and Danny. The second, who is also big, approaches them and says he knows who planted the bomb. "His first father," he said. But Paul says that he doesn't have another father and that he is just an illusion created by Danny.
Earl meets Marcy, who defends her husband but tries to insinuate that Anna is evil. He might even have made the threats himself for the insurance money. Avi tries to question Danny to ensure the children's safety. He tells Janine about the hallucinations he had when his father was standing. He instinctively grabs her hand and tries to comfort her, but they have an uneasy moment when the two get out of their grasp.
Avi interviews Danny in a very subtle way. He speaks highly of his mother and reveals that Paul and Elizabeth are having marital problems. However, when asked who planted the bomb, he pointed to his father.
Paul then explains that Danny is mad at him and takes him out by falsely seducing him. The reason is that Danny feels Paul is the one who kicked Elizabeth out for fighting. So he went to Mexico to be with his parents, he had gone before, but this time Paul felt he was not coming back.
Anna gets another call and Kathleen is more worried than ever. Avi feels that Danny is protecting his mother rather than blaming his father.
He feels that he has planted a bomb. Janine clears up last night's incident and Avi looks a little disappointed. Ann's co-worker Sarah arrives at the station. He says that Anna knows who the caller is, but she denies it. Paul reveals that Elizabeth works at Valley Forge, an elite club downtown, and has lost a lot of money on a crypto investment. Avi suggests that she is missing and not safe, something Paul disagrees with.
Episode Review
This is the most philosophical episode of the season. How Kelley and the writing team could create Avi as a hero with a certain je ne sai quois was always the question. Crime is a pretty wide field to play in, and by episode 5, they've done it perfectly.
As opposed to a weakness for other similarly situated characters on modern television, his deeply loyal core emerges as his strength. This choice should be appreciated. Avi is more than just solving crimes: he also has a great understanding of the human condition.
There was a lack of anticipation when it came to the transition in the storylines. After Conte's case surprisingly ends in episode 4, when we all expect it to burn until the end, the writers waste no time setting up their next move. This new case has a similar emotional energy and alienation to get your popcorn back. But Avi and co must investigate again to solve two cases; the bomb and the disappearance of Elizabeth Serra. And it doesn't end well either.
