The Calling Season 1 Episode Number 8 Preview and review
The Calling Season 1
Episode 8 Preview & Review
The next day, Paul calls them and tells them that he finally got a call from Elizabeth. He is actually in a hotel in Mexico City. He even gives them a number to confirm, but the detectives aren't sure. Paul yells angrily and tells them to leave them alone now. That night, he takes the children to Mexico to be with Elizabeth.
Avi orders surveillance units outside his house and the duo try to find possible reasons to arrest Paul until night falls. He discovers that Paul was the one who got greedy and sent about $700,000 of the crypto proceeds to the Alexandria Profits hedge fund and lost it all. Avi immediately recognizes the name from the painting of the Port of Alexandria in the Gallery's foyer.
They go to confront Hanny and suspect that he created this fake fund to convince Elizabeth to leave Paul. She saw Paul's loss of money as the last straw in their relationship.
After another staring contest with Janine, he suspects her of "the crime" of destroying a loving family, though Hanney rejects the suggestion. Avi says that even though Hanni escaped prison on earth, her "sin" will not be forgiven or forgiven by God. He will one day be judged for what he has done.
What Hanni didn't do, the detectives are sure, was kill Elizabeth. The doubt rests squarely on Paul. A rabbi, a friend of Avi's, visits the precinct to perform an offering from the Jewish community and invites Janine and Avi to Sukkoh that night. Avi and Janine then go straight to Paul's house and break down the door.
Avi looks for secret passages and finds one in the wall. He tears down the false wall and I'm sure they find drag marks. They also find blood and plastic marks, now convinced that Paul killed Elizabeth.
A chance interaction with the bomb and Janie clicking Paul's picture coincided with Paul quickly working to take care of the body. Avi says he knows exactly where Paul is; the construction site where he finished the task. Avi's guess is correct and Paul stands there with a knife in hand and a bloody wrist.
Although he tried to commit suicide, he was overcome with the idea of making his children orphans. He buried Elizabeth's body under the finished floor, and Avi informs the backup of getting her out. Paul is brought to the station and begins to explain why he killed Elizabeth.
It wasn't because he lost all his money. This was not the reason Elizabeth wanted to leave Paul. it was because she was in love with Hanni, as she claimed. It took water over his head and Paul couldn't help himself.
Danny couldn't process the change and envisioned Paul as both the first and second father. One version was before he killed his mother, and the second was writing it. Avi gets all worked up about Paul and compares him to the first murderer in the Bible, Cain, who out of jealousy killed the man who received God's favor instead of him.
When Earl goes in to pick up Paul, the big man disarms him and tries to escape. He knocks the police officer unconscious and he successfully closes the door before Paul can escape.
But Paul takes the officer's gun and points it at Avi. He is about to pull the trigger when Kathleen shoots him dead. This is the first time he has used a weapon while performing his duty.
The case is over and Janine thanks Avi for teaching her how to be a mensch at work, the only thing she needs to remember while doing it. Earl returns to his wife and young daughter. Kathleen is being placed on administrative leave for a few weeks and will be fine.
Janine and Avi go to a Sukkah celebration and she immediately makes an impression on the Rabbi. Meanwhile, Avi receives a phone call about another crime, and this time, unfortunately, it's his friend Professor John. Police, quite shockingly, describe the suspect as John. But how can a person be a victim and a murderer? Avi is emotionally torn for his friend. John has a blood tattoo on his forehead that says "father" in English. He prays for his fallen friend and the final episode ends as the first episode began.
Episode Review
This ending was certainly unexpected and made the finale even more compelling. Episode 8 of The Calling didn't feel strong, even though there were enough rusty genre elements to complement this part of the story.
Elizabeth's secret leads to another puzzle for Avi and Janice. This time, the mercurial detective has a personal element - his good friend John. In retrospect, his character felt a little undercooked, which is unfortunate given his potential. Everything about him screamed nuance, but unfortunately it was left out.
If we do get a second season, I hope the writers make an effort to integrate her character into the narrative with a story that will certainly be worth exploring. This is the end of season 1 of The Calling. Expect a full season preview soon!
