Urusei Yatsura episode 17 Recap 

Urusei Yatsura episode 17 begins with Ryunosuke planning to buy himself a bra with the money he saved. Meanwhile, three men start taking photos of Shinobu as she walks down the path alone. He sees them, runs, and runs into Ryunosuke. He asks Ryunosuke to stay with him for a while. He sees Ryunosuke feeling bad and explains that he can't buy a bra because it costs 1000+ yen. Shinobu comforts her and says she can try to raise another 100 yen to buy one from the bargain box.  

 The men following Shinobu introduce themselves as high school students from Butsumetsu High School. They tell Shinobu that their boss is interested in going out with him. Shinobu upsets them by rejecting his boss's offer. They tell Shinobu that his boss insists on meeting him, and Shinobu prepares to meet his boss. But he leaves after seeing what his boss looks like in a photo. In her superiors hideout, she professes her love for Shinobu. His henchmen plan to take pictures of Shinobu with his girlfriend, hoping that his boss will let go of his feelings.

  At Tomobiki High, Shinobu explains to Ataru and his friends that she and Ryunosuke are going on a date to help the boys of Butsumetsu High with their boss' love. Ryunosuke meets guys who promise to give him 5,000 yen in exchange for those pictures. The men ask Ryunosuke and Shinobu to strike a few poses that make them look like a romantic couple. Ryunosuke starts to lose his temper and is punched by Shinobu. Ataru interrupts one of the photo sessions while taking photos at the cafe. Ryunosuke punches Ataru and tells him to mind his own business.

  Ataru shows Ryunosuke a bra he can have if he stops dating Shinobu. Lum electrocutes Ataru for trying to mess with him, allowing the Butsumetsu boys, Shinobu and Ryunosuke to escape. They try to take a picture by the water fountain, but Ataru finds them. To make matters worse, the boss of the Butsumetsu boys shows up and tries to have his way with Shinobu. Ryunosuke tries to pick it up, but it falls on the head of Cherry's cat friend.

  His friend puts it on the grill and it falls apart. The boss of the Butsumetsu boys stands up and wants to rub Shinobu. The boys steal Ataru's bra bag and offer it to their boss. Ataru and Ryunosuke try to slide it back, but the boss of the Butsumetsu boys eats it. The episode ends with Ataru's mother revealing that she is.

  The next set piece begins with an anthropomorphic star crashing into Ataru, his family, and Lum's house while they are eating. The star, who is considered the Wishing Star, says that he has come to grant their three wishes because they are poor. Ataru's parents ignore the request as they are angry at the Wish Star's rudeness. Feeling terrible about it, Wishing Star gives Ataru's father a star sticker to write his wish on. He wishes for the house to return to normal, and the Wishing Star grants it. After seeing his magic, Ataru's family welcomes him with open arms.

While everyone argues over the second wish, Cherry uses it to eat. Wishing Star says she can't accept cancellations and there's only one left. Ataru tries to take the Wishing Star to his room, but his mother catches him in the act. He buys the Wishing Star items to prevent Ataru from making a stupid wish. In his room – Ataru tries to make a wish, but is denied by the Wishing Star. Ataru and Lum meet with Ataru's parents to discuss his dream. The Wishing Star tells them they have until morning to make a wish. The Wishing Star helps Ataru grab some refreshments from his family's fridge.

  Ataru's mother says they should hold a lottery to decide who will get the last wish. They hold a lottery and Ataru's father wins. Ataru's mother checks her husband's wishes and it turns out that he wants to rebuild his life. Ataru and his mother decided it was better to ask for money and go to the kitchen. Everyone dreams of the Wishing Star after drinking too many beers. Cherry puts the wishing sticker on her mouth and asks the Wishing Star to wake up. He wakes up, but escapes because Ataru's family has no more wishes left. The episode ends with Ataru and his parents devastated.

  Episode Review

  This was a fun chapter of Urusei Yatsura that focused more on Ryunosuke's womanizing journey. He went through many uncomfortable hurdles and got nothing in return. On that note, this episode reminds viewers that despite his bad habit of falling in love with every attractive woman he meets, Ataru still has a crush on Shinobu.

  Although his actions are terrible, Ataru does show some kindness towards Ryunosuke. It's a rare act of kindness on her part to give her a bra to save her from pretending to be Shinobu's girlfriend. Although this was Ataru's attempt out of jealousy, it was nice that he offered Ryunosuke a way out of this embarrassing situation.

  The second bit was decent. This gives the audience new insights into Ataru's family dynamics. Although Ataru's mother likes to scold her son for his bad behavior, she still cares for him. Ataru's father was shocked that he would rather rebuild his life than mend his relationship with his wife and son. This will make some think back to the whole Rei and Ataru mother situation a few chapters back.  

 Overall, this was a decent addition to Urusei Yatsura's (2022) season. This puts more focus on Ryunosuke and shows his continued growth in achieving his goal. We also get great slapstick, jokes, and the odd one-liner between both set pieces. As always, I hope we get some drama between Lum and Ataru.
